Assessment for and as learning resources have been a growing focus of the numeracy development at the Matawa Schools. Numeracy Nets were purchased to assist elementary teachers with assessment for student learning and training is provided. The Ontario Numeracy Assessment Program (ONAP) and Gap Closing Tools are available for Secondary teachers to assist with their assessment as learning.
Matawa has purchased The Leveled Literacy Intervention Programs and the Benchmark Assessment Systems 1 and 2 by Fountas and Pinnell. A Balanced Literacy Approach is being implemented and schools are encouraged to use uninterrupted blocks of time for literacy to ensure sufficient time for student learning.
There has been a focus on assisting teachers in the planning of literacy instruction using assessment, observation and record keeping in order to group students and drive instruction. Through modeled, shared, guided and independent practices, teachers are able to assist students to communicate effectively through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Integrating other areas of the curriculum with the teaching language arts is also being encouraged.
The Handwriting Without Tears program was purchased for the kindergarten to grade 2 classrooms. In the fall of 2014, the program has expanded to grade 3 classes. A variety of ETFO’s resources about kindergarten years, play and observation were purchased for the kindergarten classes. Matawa recently purchased early learning classroom materials and furniture for all the kindergarten classes at Matawa schools.
