Over the past five years,the programs and services the Department provides to Matawa First Nation schools and communities have grown significantly. Coupled with continuing changes to First Nation education,this has created a need to enhance the Department’s capacity to effectively provide these supports and services. With a mandate from the Matawa Chiefs in Assembly, the Department is developing options for its organizational development that will allow it to continue carrying out this important work. Strategic Planning Matawa Education is currently in the process of renewing their Regional 5 Year Strategic Plan for Education for 2014-2019. A process of review, key informant interviews and consultation with community stakeholders has been underway and will culminate in a draft plan ready for December 2014.
1. Document Review, a variety of literature and documentation has been reviewed relating to First Nations Education and specifically that of the Matawa Communities. A comprehensive review of demographic and educational statistical information has also been underway, including review of existing community education strategic plans.
2. Key informant interviews and Community visits will be undertaken in the early fall of 2014 to gather more data and information directly from the communities themselves. This will include, parents, student, elders and leadership, amongst others.
3. A Strategic Planning Exercise will be conducted to draft the Plan following the community visits. Members from each community will participate via the Regional Action Committee on Education.
4. The draft will be presented to each community in person and finally to the Chiefs for final approval in December of 2014.
